Electrical Safety at Home: 10 Things Every Homeowner Should Know

From overloaded sockets to outdated wiring, here are the most important electrical safety points for UK homeowners.

Electrical safety is something most homeowners think about only when something goes wrong — a tripped circuit breaker, a burning smell, or a sparking socket. But good electrical safety is about prevention, not reaction. In the UK, electrical faults cause around 20,000 house fires every year, accounting for roughly half of all accidental dwelling fires. Most of these are preventable.

One of the most common hazards is the overloaded extension lead. Plugging a multi-gang extension into another extension — a "daisy chain" — is widely recognised as dangerous, but millions of UK homes still have them in use. Each extension lead has a maximum load rating, typically 13 amps (around 3,000 watts). Exceeding it causes the cable to overheat, which can ignite nearby materials. The solution is simple: have additional sockets fitted by a qualified electrician.

If your home has a fuse box with rewirable fuses rather than a modern consumer unit with MCBs and RCDs, it is worth having it assessed. Old-style fuse boards offer minimal protection against electric shock and fire. A modern consumer unit with RCD protection will disconnect the circuit within milliseconds of detecting a fault current — potentially saving your life. Consumer unit upgrades start from around £350 and are one of the most cost-effective safety investments a homeowner can make.

Finally, don't ignore warning signs. A socket that feels warm, a switch that crackles, lights that flicker, or a circuit breaker that trips repeatedly are all signs of an underlying fault that needs professional investigation. Electrical faults can develop slowly over time; catching them early is far cheaper and safer than dealing with the consequences. If you notice anything unusual, call a qualified electrician promptly rather than waiting to see if it gets worse.
