Electric showers heat water on demand using an electric heating element, making them independent of the hot water system and available instantly at any time of day. They are the most popular shower type in the UK, and the market ranges from budget units at around £60 to premium models with digital controls at over £250. Choosing the right model involves balancing power output, features, and compatibility with your existing electrical installation.
Power output is the most important technical specification. Electric showers are rated in kilowatts: 7.5kW, 8.5kW, 9kW, 9.5kW, and 10.5kW are the most common ratings. Higher power delivers warmer water at higher flow rates — particularly important in winter when incoming cold water temperature is lower. A 10.5kW shower will maintain a comfortable temperature in all seasons; however, it requires 10mm² cable and a 45A MCB, while an 8.5kW shower requires 6mm² cable and a 40A MCB.
If you are replacing an existing electric shower, the power rating of the new shower must be compatible with the existing circuit — or the circuit must be upgraded. Replacing a 7.5kW shower with a 10.5kW model on an existing 6mm² circuit is dangerous and must not be done. DP Power Solutions always checks the circuit specification before connecting a replacement shower, and includes any necessary circuit upgrades in the quotation.
Features to consider include thermostatic control (maintains temperature even if water pressure fluctuates elsewhere), economy modes (which reduce power output in warmer months), and digital displays. Mira, Triton, and Aqualisa are the most established UK brands, with good parts availability and customer support. DP Power Solutions is happy to supply and fit your choice of shower model, or recommend options to suit your budget.
