Extension leads are ubiquitous in UK homes — almost every household has at least one. Used correctly, they are a practical convenience; used carelessly, they are one of the most common causes of electrical fires. RoSPA identifies overloaded extension leads as a significant fire risk, responsible for thousands of fires each year in the UK.
The most dangerous misuse of extension leads is the daisy chain — connecting one extension into another. Each extension lead is rated for a maximum total load, typically 13A (3,120W). Daisy-chaining does not increase this rating; the full combined load must still be within the rating of the first extension. The cable in the first extension carries the full combined load and will overheat if this rating is exceeded.
Coiled extension leads are particularly dangerous. A coiled cable has poor heat dissipation and can overheat quickly when loaded. If you must use a reel-type extension lead, always uncoil it fully before use. Reel extension leads should also be rated for their full cable length when uncoiled — check the label, as some are only rated at full load when uncoiled.
The safe solution to extension lead dependency is to have additional sockets installed by a qualified electrician. Additional sockets eliminate the need for extension leads entirely, providing permanent, safely-rated outlets exactly where you need them. The cost is modest — typically £80–£150 per double socket — and far less than the cost of damage caused by an electrical fire. DP Power Solutions installs additional sockets across Staffordshire.
