A home extension offers the opportunity to add significant living space to your property — but it also brings electrical planning considerations that need to be addressed early in the design process, ideally before planning permission is sought. Getting electrical requirements right from the start avoids costly changes during construction and ensures the finished extension is safe, practical, and compliant with Part P of the Building Regulations.
The first question is whether the existing consumer unit can accommodate the additional circuits the extension will require. A kitchen extension, for example, might need a cooker circuit, fridge/freezer circuits, multiple ring main additions, and dedicated lighting circuits. A single-storey rear extension for use as a home office might need only additional socket circuits and data cabling. In either case, the electrician needs to review the existing installation — including the capacity of the consumer unit and the condition of the existing wiring — before planning the new circuits.
All new electrical work in an extension is notifiable under Part P of the Building Regulations. Either the work must be carried out by a competent person registered with an approved scheme (such as NAPIT or NICEIC), who self-certifies the work, or a Building Notice must be submitted to the local authority before work begins, with a building control inspector signing off the work on completion. DP Power Solutions is fully registered and handles all notification and certification as part of the service.
Practical planning points include specifying sufficient socket outlets — building regulations set minimum requirements, but in practice it is always worth installing more sockets than you think you'll need, as adding them later is far more expensive. Consider future requirements: USB sockets, network points, TV aerial or satellite connections, and any smart home provision should all be considered at the first-fix stage when cables can be run freely within the open stud walls.
