Hot Tub Electrical Installation: What You Need to Know

Installing a hot tub requires specialist electrical work. Here's what's involved and why it must be done by a qualified electrician.

Hot tubs and swim spas are large electrical loads that require a dedicated electrical supply. The combination of water, high-voltage electricity, and outdoor installation means that hot tub electrical work must be carried out strictly in accordance with BS 7671 Part 7 requirements for special locations, and must be carried out by a qualified electrician. Attempting a DIY hot tub electrical connection is extremely dangerous and will invalidate the hot tub warranty and your home insurance.

Most domestic hot tubs require a 32A or 40A dedicated circuit run in 6mm² or 10mm² cable respectively, protected by a 30mA RCD. The supply point for the hot tub is typically a lockable weatherproof isolator switch mounted near the tub but outside the defined exclusion zones. From the isolator, the final connection to the hot tub is made via a flexible cable and connector specified by the manufacturer.

BS 7671 defines exclusion zones around hot tubs and swim spas that restrict which types of electrical equipment may be installed. A zone of 1.5m around the tub perimeter is defined as Zone B, within which only the tub's own equipment and 12V SELV equipment may be installed. General socket outlets, switches, and standard lighting must not be installed within this zone.

The cable route typically runs armoured SWA cable from the consumer unit to the outdoor isolator. If the cable must cross under a patio or driveway, it must be buried at the correct depth and protected. All electrical work associated with hot tub installation is notifiable under Part P of the Building Regulations. DP Power Solutions carries out hot tub electrical installations as part of a comprehensive outdoor electrical service.
