LED technology has transformed domestic lighting over the past decade. Modern LED lamps are 80–90% more efficient than the halogen and incandescent lamps they replace, last 10–20× longer, and are available in a far wider range of colour temperatures, beam angles, and form factors. For most Staffordshire homeowners, switching to LED throughout the house is one of the most impactful energy-saving steps they can take.
The most common LED upgrade is replacing recessed halogen downlights. A typical 50W GU10 halogen lamp can be replaced with a 5W LED equivalent — the same light output for one-tenth of the energy. A kitchen with ten 50W halogens uses 500W while lit; the LED equivalent uses 50W. At around 25p/kWh, running the kitchen lights for 3 hours per day costs around 45p with halogens and just 4.5p with LEDs. The saving across a full house can be £100–£200 per year.
Not all LED lamps are interchangeable with their halogen predecessors. LED lamps need a compatible dimmer switch to dim smoothly — older leading-edge (TRIAC) dimmers designed for halogen lamps often cause LED lamps to flicker, buzz, or not dim to low levels. Replacing halogen dimmers with LED-compatible trailing-edge dimmers is usually required when upgrading a dimming circuit. Some older 12V MR16 transformer systems also require the transformers to be replaced with LED drivers.
Colour temperature is a personal choice. Warm white (2700K) is most similar to traditional incandescent and creates a cosy atmosphere in living rooms and bedrooms. Cool white (4000K) is crisper, often preferred in kitchens and home offices. Some LED systems offer tunable white — adjustable colour temperature via a smart control — which allows you to vary the atmosphere throughout the day.
