Outdoor electrical installations present unique challenges that differ significantly from indoor work. Exposure to weather, moisture, physical damage, and changing ground conditions means that outdoor cables, accessories, and equipment need to be specified and installed to a higher standard than their indoor counterparts. Getting this wrong is not merely an inconvenience — outdoor electrical faults are a significant cause of electrocution and fire.
The key requirement for all outdoor electrical installations is appropriate IP (Ingress Protection) rating. IP ratings indicate how well an enclosure is sealed against solid particles and liquids. For outdoor sockets and connections, a minimum of IP44 is required; for fittings directly exposed to rain (such as garden wall lanterns), IP55 or higher is appropriate. All outdoor circuits must be protected by a 30mA RCD — this is a mandatory requirement of BS 7671, not a recommendation.
Cable installation outdoors requires particular care. Cables buried in garden areas must be at a minimum depth of 500mm (600mm under driveways and footpaths), protected by cable covers and route markers. The preferred cable type for burial is Steel Wire Armoured (SWA) cable, which resists mechanical damage from gardening tools and ground movement. Flexible cables intended for indoor use must never be buried or left permanently outdoors.
When planning outdoor electrical work — whether it's a garden lighting scheme, power to a shed or garage, a hot tub connection, or an EV charger — it's worth thinking about the long term. An additional circuit installed at the same time as initial outdoor work is far cheaper than returning later.
