Electric Underfloor Heating: Installation, Costs, and What to Expect

Electric underfloor heating is a popular addition to kitchens and bathrooms. Here's what the installation involves and how to get it right.

Electric underfloor heating has become increasingly popular in kitchens and bathrooms, where it provides comfortable warmth underfoot without the bulk of radiators. There are two main types: mat systems, which consist of a heating cable pre-laid on a mesh mat, and loose cable systems, which offer more flexibility for complex room shapes. Both require a dedicated electrical circuit and a thermostat with a floor temperature sensor.

Installation is typically carried out at the floor tiling stage: the heating mat or cable is laid over the sub-floor, the temperature sensor is installed in conduit between the heating elements, and the thermostat wiring is connected. The thermostat is usually installed on the wall close to the door. The assembly is then covered with tile adhesive and tiles. Thermostat manufacturers recommend a minimum temperature sensor depth of 50mm from the edge of tiles to avoid inaccurate readings.

The power demand of electric underfloor heating varies by area covered and the mat's wattage rating. A typical bathroom mat of 2–3m² at 150W/m² draws 300–450W and can usually be supplied from a nearby spur. A full kitchen floor of 10m² at 150W/m² draws 1.5kW, which benefits from a dedicated circuit. In bathrooms, all underfloor heating circuits must comply with BS 7671 Part 7 (special locations), including RCD protection and correct zone compliance for the thermostat.

Running costs depend on usage patterns and electricity tariffs. Electric underfloor heating is most economical when used with an Economy 7 or similar off-peak tariff, using stored warmth to reduce daytime running. Smart thermostats — such as those by Heatmiser or Nest — allow precise scheduling and can be controlled remotely via smartphone. DP Power Solutions installs all types of electric underfloor heating and advises on thermostat selection to suit your needs and budget.
