Testing your smoke alarm is a simple but essential task that should be done weekly. Press and hold the test button on the alarm until it sounds — this confirms the sounder and battery are working. If the alarm does not sound or the tone is weak, replace the battery immediately. For mains-wired alarms, a weak or absent test tone indicates a fault that should be reported to a qualified electrician.
Test every alarm in the property individually. In an interlinked system, triggering one alarm should cause all alarms to sound — this verifies the interconnection as well as the individual devices. If any alarm fails to sound when another is triggered, investigate the interconnection or call an electrician.
Beyond weekly testing, alarms should be vacuumed gently every 6 months to remove dust from the sensing chamber. Replace batteries annually unless the alarm has a sealed long-life battery. Replace the entire alarm every 10 years — smoke sensors degrade over time and older alarms may not respond correctly to smoke even if they pass the test button check.
If your alarm sounds unexpectedly and there is no sign of fire or smoke, it may be a false alarm caused by cooking fumes, steam, or dust. Ventilate the area and press the silence/hush button if available. Recurring false alarms in a specific location suggest the alarm may be poorly positioned. DP Power Solutions can advise on alarm placement and replace any alarms that are not performing correctly.
