Outdoor electrical installations present unique safety challenges because of exposure to weather, moisture, physical damage, and changing ground conditions. Getting outdoor electrics right is important not just for safety but for durability — a poorly installed outdoor circuit that allows moisture ingress will fail, and may do so in a way that presents a shock or fire risk.
All outdoor circuits must be protected by a 30mA RCD — this is a mandatory requirement, not a recommendation. The RCD must be correctly installed and tested. All outdoor accessories (sockets, junction boxes, light fittings) must carry an appropriate IP rating. IP44 is the minimum for most outdoor accessories; IP65 is recommended for fittings directly exposed to rain.
Cables buried in garden areas must be at a minimum depth of 500mm (600mm under driveways and footpaths). They must be protected by cable covers laid above them and route markers to prevent accidental damage by digging. Steel Wire Armoured (SWA) cable is the preferred type for burial — it resists mechanical damage from garden tools and ground movement. PVC sheathed cable should never be buried directly in the ground.
Extension leads must never be used for permanent outdoor installations, even weatherproof ones. They are for temporary use only. Any permanent outdoor power supply — for a shed, garden lighting, EV charger, or hot tub — must be a properly installed fixed circuit certificated under Part P of the Building Regulations.
