Smart home technology has moved from luxury to mainstream in a few short years. Voice-controlled lighting, intelligent heating, smart doorbells and cameras, and connected EV charging are common aspirations for new build and renovation projects. Getting the electrical infrastructure right at the outset makes all the difference — it is far easier and cheaper to run cables during a renovation than to retrofit them through finished plasterwork.
Smart lighting systems — whether based on Philips Hue, Lutron, or similar — require either a neutral wire at every switch position (for smart switches) or purpose-designed modules. Many older properties were wired without neutral conductors at switch positions, making some smart switch products incompatible without rewiring the switch drops. An electrician can identify which systems work with your existing wiring and advise on any upgrades required.
Smart heating controls — such as Nest, Hive, or Worcester Bosch smart controls — typically connect wirelessly to existing heating system wiring, but require mains power at the thermostat location. Home energy management systems that integrate heating, solar, battery storage, and EV charging require careful co-ordination between the electrician, solar installer, and heating engineer. The electrical design of these systems should be agreed before any components are ordered.
For major renovations, consider a structured cabling approach: installing Cat6 data cabling to every room alongside the power wiring, even if you don't plan to use it immediately. Wireless networks have improved enormously, but a wired connection remains faster and more reliable for bandwidth-hungry applications. Running conduit in walls during a renovation costs little extra and makes future cable installation far easier.
